What are Small Groups?
Small groups are typically groups of 5-12 people who meet together on a regular basis to form friendships, learn from the Bible, and encourage each other. If you’re interested in making friends at church and growing in your faith, small groups are the place to do it! We believe that small groups are critical for community and authentic relationships to happen at Journey.
When & how often do groups meet?
Most groups meet weekly or two to three times a month, usually in someone’s home. In addition to regular meetings, groups may also meet for occasional social events and/or service projects. We have groups meeting on various nights of the week, so you should be able to find one that fits your schedule!
What kinds of groups are there?
We have a variety of different groups. Some are for anyone. Some are for couples’. Some are targeted toward college and young adult. If you’re interested in joining a small group, we’ll help you find one for you.
What happens during a typical small group meeting?
A typical meeting consists of some social time, a relevant Bible discussion, prayer, and (of course!) food! J
What if I don’t know much about the Bible?
No problem!! That’s what small groups are for — to help people grow and learn about the Bible together. Don’t worry; you don’t have to know all the right answers! And your small group leader won’t pressure you to talk or pray out loud if you’re uncomfortable doing so. Small groups have a very relaxed, casual, “come-as-you-are” atmosphere. We’re all on a journey together!
Why does JCC have small groups?
We do small groups at JCC for several reasons…
First, small groups have been a part of the church since it began 2000 years ago! Acts 2:46 says, “They worshiped together at the temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity…” These early Christians not only met as a large group to worship, but also as small groups in homes to fellowship and share meals. (Did we mention food again? J ) We want to follow the example of the early church by having small groups too.
Second, small groups are important to us because we want every person at JCC to form meaningful friendships with other people from church. Sunday mornings are a time for worship and learning as a large group. Even with the coffee time after the service, there just isn’t enough time to form deep friendships — there are too many people and too few minutes! Small groups are the best place for developing real relationships.
Third, we do small groups because they help people grow spiritually. Our groups focus on helping each other apply the Bible to everyday life. Having friends who encourage and pray for you is a great recipe for growth!
Finally, we love small groups because they’re FUN! Hanging out with other people who want to know God better is a blast!
Small groups at JCC…
One of our values as a church is authentic relationships. We believe that the best way to develop relationships is within the context of a small group. Small groups are made up of people who form friendships as they gather together and encourage each other. That’s what small groups at JCC are all about!
Getting into a small group…
We typically start small groups in September, January and various times throughout the year. If you would like to get involved, please watch the website for new listings or contact the church office.
